Saudi main market drops 1.17% as decliners dominate trading

A broad market decline

Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index fell 123.54 points, or 1.17%, to close at 10,455.64. Trading turnover reached SR3.63 billion, equivalent to about $966 million, with 202 million shares changing hands during the session.

Market breadth was decisively negative. Only 27 listed companies advanced, while 236 declined. That distribution shows the weakness extended well beyond a small group of heavyweight stocks and affected most of the market.

Other indices move lower

The MSCI Tadawul 30 index dropped 1.15% to 1,409.02, broadly matching the direction of the main market. The Nomu parallel-market index also declined, losing 0.81% to end at 21,287.11.

When the main index, the large-cap benchmark, and the parallel market all fall in the same session, the pattern points to broadly cautious positioning. However, individual corporate developments still produced notable exceptions to the overall market direction.

Gainers and decliners

Knowledge Economic City led the gainers with a 10% rise to SR22.11. Arabian Drilling advanced 4.59% to SR95.70, while MOBI Industry climbed 5.62% to SR11.85 after saying it had applied to transfer its listing from Nomu to the main market.

On the other side, Abo Moati for Bookstores posted the largest decline, falling 8.06% to SR32.40. East Pipes followed with a 7.98% drop to SR180. The contrast between a small group of advancing shares and the market’s 236 decliners highlights the selective nature of the session’s positive moves.

Arabian Drilling’s contract catalyst

Arabian Drilling also announced a four-year contract worth about SR2 billion with Khafji Joint Operations. The agreement covers four offshore jack-up rigs and lifts the company’s backlog to around SR18 billion. The announcement gave investors a company-specific earnings and revenue catalyst during a weak broader session.

What it means for investors

The day’s trading illustrates the difference between index direction and stock-specific performance. Weak breadth signals pressure across the market, but contract awards, listing developments, and other corporate disclosures can still drive individual shares higher.

What to watch

Investors should monitor whether selling pressure persists across sectors or narrows in subsequent sessions. Turnover, market breadth, and the behavior of large-cap shares will help assess the durability of the decline. For the session’s gainers, attention will shift to execution: converting contracts and strategic announcements into earnings and cash flow remains the key test.
