Closing Bell: Saudi main index edges up to 10,589 as breadth turns negative

The news
Saudi Arabia's Tadawul All Share Index closed higher on Thursday, gaining 45.62 points, or 0.43 percent, to finish the session at 10,589.72. Total turnover on the benchmark reached SR4.60 billion ($1.23 billion).
The headline gain masked a session that was narrower than it first appears. Market breadth was negative, with 112 stocks advancing against 129 decliners — meaning the index rose despite more constituents falling than rising.
Background
A rising index paired with negative breadth typically points to a top-heavy session, where gains are concentrated in a small number of larger or more actively traded names rather than distributed across the market. It is a different signal from a broad-based advance, and one worth separating from the headline percentage move.
The secondary gauges pointed the same direction on the day. The parallel market, Nomu, rose 65.17 points, or 0.30 percent, to close at 21,834.98, with 40 stocks advancing and 26 declining. The MSCI Tadawul Index added 11.23 points, or 0.80 percent, to end at 1,423.43.
The numbers
Session leaders were concentrated in smaller industrial and agricultural names:
- Tabuk Agricultural Development Co. — up 10 percent to SR10.34
- Saudi Paper Manufacturing Co. — up 7.14 percent to SR69
- Takween Advanced Industries Co. — up 6.91 percent to SR4.95
The declines were equally sharp at the other end of the table:
- The Co. for Cooperative Insurance — down 9.99 percent to SR122.60
- Methanol Chemicals Co. — down 9.98 percent to SR35.90
- Riyadh Cement Co. — down 5.14 percent to SR20.87
Double-digit moves in both directions, spread across agriculture, insurance and petrochemicals, underline how uneven the session was beneath the index level.
Corporate earnings
Two first-half results landed alongside the close. Dar Alarkan Real Estate Development Co. posted a net profit of SR498 million for the first six months of the year, an increase of 11.38 percent year on year, which the company attributed to higher property sales.
Astra Industrial Group reported a six-month net profit of SR365 million, up 5.3 percent year on year.
What it means for investors
The earnings figures matter more than the day's index move. Profit growth of 11.38 percent in real estate and 5.3 percent in industrials indicates first-half corporate earnings in two significant sectors are still expanding, which supports valuations independently of daily price action.
The negative breadth, however, argues against reading Thursday's close as evidence of broad market strength. An index that advances while most of its constituents fall is being carried by a narrow group, and that is a fragile base for a move — it can reverse quickly if those few names turn.
What to watch
Whether breadth recovers in subsequent sessions is the more informative signal than the index level itself. A sustained advance would normally see advancers outnumber decliners. Further first-half results from Tadawul-listed real estate and industrial names will also test whether the earnings expansion shown by Dar Alarkan and Astra Industrial is sector-wide or company-specific.
